Taking Personal Responsibility With The Moon

This week's blog post is inspired by the recent Full Moon in Sagittarius and the book that I am currently reading - “Feel The Fear and Do It Anyway” by Susan Jeffers. I will start by talking about taking personal responsibility, as discussed in Chapter 4 of the book, and then explore how these ideas relate to working with the Moon.

In Chapter 4, Susan goes through seven different definitions of taking responsibility as follows;

  1. Taking responsibility means never blaming anyone else for anything you are being, doing, having or feeling.

  2. Taking responsibility means not blaming yourself.

  3. Taking responsibility means being aware of where and when you are NOT taking responsibility so that you can eventually change.

  4. Taking responsibility means handling the chatterbox.

  5. Taking responsibility means being aware of payoffs that keep you “stuck”.

  6. Taking responsibility means figuring out what you want in life and acting on it.

  7. Taking responsibility means being aware of the multitude of choices you have in any given situation.

In the chapter, Susan explains what she means by each definition. Rather than rewrite her book (which I highly recommend you read) I’m going to talk about each definition through the eyes of the Moon.

Taking responsibility means never blaming anyone else for anything you are being, doing, having or feeling.

So often we are stuck in victim mode, blaming everything and everyone else for whatever is going on in our life. I know I am certainly guilty of this!! Part of the Full Moon Ritual that I teach is to practise forgiveness. Buddha is quoted as saying “Holding onto anger is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die”. When we forgive other people for the perceived wrongs they have done to us, we can let go of that pain and anger, and take back our control.

Taking responsibility means not blaming yourself.

This is a hard one. If we can’t blame other people for our circumstances then that just leaves us right? You need to remember that you are always doing your best with what you have available to you at the time. And learn to forgive yourself when you make a mistake. We are not perfect, and making mistakes is how we learn. Again, this is part of the Full Moon Forgiveness Ritual.

Taking responsibility means being aware of where and when you are NOT taking responsibility so that you can eventually change.

One of the things I encourage my clients to do is to keep a record of not just their wins and progress between the New Moon and the Full Moon, but also the challenges and obstacles they face. This means that come the Full Moon, they have a list of things they can journal on and work on. We are a constant work in progress, always learning and growing.

Taking responsibility means handling the chatterbox.

This is that internal voice that tells you that you can’t do something. I call it my mean girl, I’m sure you have your own word for it. When you decide to do something, listen to that initial reaction. And then start digging. What is the reason behind why you don’t want to do the thing? Some people refer to this as blocks, I prefer to call it resistance. And during a Full Moon Release Ritual, we can work through this resistance, to get to the root cause and the reason that you are not making the progress that you want.

Taking responsibility means being aware of payoffs that keep you “stuck”.

I love this one!! The reason you are staying in the situation that you complain about is because you are getting some sort of benefit from it. By playing the victim, you are getting attention and sympathy. On the Full Moon, we can look at these benefits and find different ways to get them. This can be the hardest one to get your head around, and the reason we work with the Full Moon is because the moon pulls our emotions closer to the surface, making them ready to be worked through and processed.

Taking responsibility means figuring out what you want in life and acting on it.

Are you just going through the motions of life or are you in control? By setting New Moon Intentions and Wishes, we decide what we want and then we take action to get it. Once you know what you want you have a focus and a destination, and we can review the progress we are making each New Moon when we recommit to our dreams, goals and wishes.

Taking responsibility means being aware of the multitude of choices you have in any given situation.

You always have a choice. You can choose to stay where you are or you can choose to make changes in your life. Working with the Moon gives you the opportunity to work on each area of your life as the Moon passes through it in your birth chart.

I hope you have found this week's blog helpful. I would definitely recommend reading the book as there are some great activities in there to help you grow and expand in your life. And if you would like a Moon Reading then you can book one using the button below. A Moon Reading will help you to plan out your year knowing where the Moon will be in your chart for each New and Full Moon.
